How to Import and Edit Existing ARM Templates with ENSEMBLE's Visual Editor

Do you already have an ARM template and want to edit it visually instead of working directly with JSON?

With ENSEMBLE, you can import an existing ARM template, make changes using the Visual Editor, and save your updated template in just a few simple steps.

Step 1: Create a Blank Azure Application

From ENSEMBLE's Welcome page, select Blank Azure Application to open the Visual Editor.

Step 2: Import Your Existing ARM Template

Once the Blank Azure Application opens, import your ARM template.

ENSEMBLE supports several import methods. For this example, we'll import a template from a local file.
  1. Navigate to the Managed Application section of the Visual Editor.
  2. Click the Quick Menu (+) icon on the right side of the section.
  3. Select Import ARM Template from a File.
Choose your ARM template file, and ENSEMBLE will automatically load it into the Visual Editor.

Step 3: Edit Your Template Visually

Your template is now ready for editing.

Use ENSEMBLE's drag-and-drop Visual Editor to modify resources, expressions, parameters, outputs, and other template components without manually editing JSON.

Step 4: Save Your Updated ARM Template

After making your changes:
  1. Click the Save icon on ENSEMBLE's top menu.
  2. Once the template is saved, you can click the Folder icon to open the location of the saved file.  See Figure 3 below.

Your updated ARM template is now ready for deployment, sharing, or further customization.

NOTE:  Your mainTemplate.JSON file will be generated along with createUiDefinition.JSON and viewDefinition.JSON files, as ENSEMBLE automatically generates a .ZIP file for Azure Applications, but if you only requested the ARM template, the other two files will be empty.

And that's it!

In just four simple steps, you can import an existing ARM template into ENSEMBLE, make changes visually, and save the updated template without navigating complex JSON structures.

Whether you're updating existing deployments, testing new configurations, or accelerating template development, ENSEMBLE's Visual Editor helps you work faster and more efficiently while maintaining full compatibility with Azure Resource Manager templates. ENSEMBLE continuously validates ARM templates while users work, helping detect and resolve problems earlier in the development process.
